What is Sepak Takraw?
Sepak Takraw is a traditional Asian game played with a woven synthetic ball kept in the air using the feet, shoulder, elbow, knee and head but not with the hands. It evolved from a game played in the rural provinces by youth who then would past away time with the rattan ball.
Sepak Takraw is played on a court with hand-woven ball (takraw) and shares elements of many sports including soccer and volleyball. The game is played by 2 or 3 person teams who try to score points by hitting the above the net and into the court about the size of a badminton field as the opposing players attempt to 'block'.
What is its uniqueness?
Types of kick
The most important skill in Sepak takraw is of course
kicking. All kicks are not the same. Certain kicks are use for a certain
purpose.
- Inside Kick is the most basic. Inside refer to the inside of the foot. This kick is used for control, passing and setting the ball.
- Outside Kick is using the outside of the foot are usually defensive move used to retrieve or deflect the ball upwards to the next play but the most thrilling highlight of the game is when the players spikes the ball.
- Roll Spike is when a player jumps his back to the net rotate in the air kicks the ball over his shoulder opposite his kicking foot making him to flip over. It’s the most dramatic move in any game. Spike balls can reach speed of up to 80miles/hr making this moves the most exciting and crowd pleasing moments in any match. Some of the shots can be at off speed pitches as that will mess up the defence.
- Sunback Spike is a shot when the player jumps with his back to the net and kicks the ball over the same shoulder as his kicking foot. The Sunback is similar to the bicycle kick in soccer.
Types of events
Regu is a Malay word for team. In Sepak takraw, a squad of
players is known as a "Regu”. There are different events in the
game of Sepak takraw;
There are 6 disciplines of Sepak takraw events:
1. Regu Event:
- Each Regu consists of 3 players plus 2 substitutes
per team.
2. Team Event:
- Each Team consists of a squad of 3
different Regu. (total of 9 players plus 3 substitutes per team)
3. Double Event:
- Each Double Regu consists of 2 players
plus 1 substitute per team.
4. Hoop Sepak takraw:
- Each Team consist of 5
Players plus 1 substitute.
5. Beach Regu:
- Each Regu consist of 4 Players plus 1 substitute.
6. Beach Team:
- Each Team consists of a squad of 2 different
Regu.(total of 8 players plus 2 substitutes per team)
